I stumbled upon Pizza Metro by accident, on a ‘date night’ with one of my best friends, Steph. We’d gone out not planning anything (something very alien to the both of us) and on walking down from the piano bar on Battersea Rise, we saw Pizza Metro and there’s just something about the word ‘pizza’ and smell of the dough which draws you in.

First impressions – a little cheap in look and feel, there definitely wasn’t any expense spared with the cheap, plastic chequered table cloths and brash lighting. The service was slow and chaotic but it was so busy and the pizzas looked huge so we decided to brave it. We were seated within ten minutes, on a wonky plastic table, sardined between numerous other couples. I made the mistake of ordering a pretty shocking glass of house red wine, so opted for downing it with water rather than calling someone over, as they all looked a bit frazzled. As we’d been nibbling on bits and bobs all night, we weren’t overly hungry so ordered a vegetarian pizza to share (down to Steph being pretty fussy with her meat, I’d demolish a meat feast any day!) with a side salad.

(I think my phone battery had died during the course of the evening, as I can’t find a single photo of the food :S so the next best thing is their website: http://www.pizzametropizza.com/)

The pizza on first impressions looked a little disappointing, with a paper thin base and a greasy cheesy top but oh wow, the side salad! These things annoy me massively – salad is so cheap to buy and so easy to prepare so why do restaurants charge above the odds for such skimpy, unappetising portions? Pizza Metro’s side salad was no exception – uneven bits of cucumber, a sporadic onion ring and hastily chopped lettuce, and to top it off – undressed. Despite the presentation, the pizza base was very tasty – slightly chewy but light and very easy to eat, and the cheese to ragu ratio was perfect. Too many places don’t give enough cheese. When drizzled with a little of the requested balsamic oil, we demolished both our halves, and could probably have eaten more if we hadn’t have been so originally controlled!

Recommendation: 2 Stars (2 / 5)

I’d go, if you’re not bothered about service, fancy a quick meal and aren’t overly fussy about quality. It was pretty cheap and definitely did the job but in hindsight, the taste was probably helped by the bottle of wine devoured beforehand. May go back for a review when sober. Also, after researching Pizza Metro following my visit, I’ve found that they serve metre long pizzas, which I definitely missed when I went – so, another reason to give it a sober visit!
