(sorry about the horrific photos!)
Mexican must be pretty near the top in my favourite foods; however, I’m so often disappointed by Mexican style restaurants which makes me prefer my own cooking at home. However, when Sam moved to Southampton, and we realised he had a Mexican restaurant directly opposite his flat; it was only a matter of time until we gave it a go.
We went for a spontaneous meal out on a Tuesday evening, and as expected there were quite a few tables free. There was some good background music and dimmed lighting, however, the atmosphere did feel a little lacking. Ah well, it was a Tuesday night – what did we expect?! We opted for a table on the raised balcony and asked for two of the special cocktails of the day. Turned out that the specials had run out; which actually encouraged us to be good and have soft drinks instead. Healthy start, right?!
Presented with our menus, we were pretty excited about our meal ahead. There was a lovely selection of the generic dishes: nachos, burritos, fajhitas etc.. however, also some house specials that we’d never heard of before. We eventually decided on some nachos to start (you can’t go wrong with nachos!) and I had the slow cooked lamb fajhitas and Sam had some house speciality, cooked in over 25 spices.

Nachos
The nachos arrived and were a decent enough size, with all the right toppings (guacamole, sour cream, salsa, cheese…) however, nothing that blew our world. Our mains arrived a little too quickly afterwards (perhaps a result of a fairly empty restaurant). My slow cooked lamb was delicious; it had a nice kick to it and was the perfect size. Sam’s chicken in too many spices to count was okay, however, despite having so many different spices, it seemed to taste a bit bland. Not quite sure how they managed that!

Up close fajhitas
All in all, La Baronia offered an authentic experience; complete with good service and tasty food. We’d definitely go back, however, maybe on a busier night for more atmosphere.
Recommendation: (4 / 5)
NTK: Make sure you book if you’re planning on going Thursday – Sunday!
