Ben and I had gone to Camden to view some commercial property so that I’d have more of an idea of what there is out there, what questions to ask and most importantly what to look for. The property in question isn’t worth any more discussion as it was just atrocious and would have taken about hundred buckets of air freshener to get rid of the pungent Punjabi cuisine. But, I did get to discover Camden! Admittedly, on the surface Camden was more reminiscent of a Turkish holiday resort judging by the numbers of people hassling you for their various wares on the high street. However, when digging deeper you discover a hidden world of culinary exploration, more akin to a far eastern street market.
Of all the places to chose, we settled on a chain ‘Rossopomodoro’ because numerous reviews had proclaimed that this was in the top ten pizzas you could get in London. So, Ben letting the strict meat and veg diet slide (hoping his personal trainer isn’t reading this), agreed to share a pizza with me. For £9.95 for a pizza and a drink, I was sold. Although add on the ‘optional’ 12.5% service charge and it turns out not to be quite so cheap. Saying that, their staff – all Italian were well worth the obligatory extra.
We ordered the Verduretta and just five minutes later, it appeared in front of us. We were offered chilli oil, parmesan and freshly ground pepper of which we said yes to all but the parmesan and dived into our pizza. And, wow! Reviews, for once you weren’t lying – Rossopomodoro’s pizza more than made up for the failings of Pizza East. The dough was perfectly seasoned, the right thin-ness and had a soft, chewy almost pancake tasting crust. The tomato ragu was also delicious, Ben guessed that it had balsamic in it as it did have that slight acidic-sweet taste. I had only intended to eat a quarter, but I left Rossopomodoro over half a pizza down.
One of the highlights was being able to see the wood fired pizza oven! It’s so satisfying to be able to watch your pizza made in front of you. Also, the staff answered every single one of my inquisitive questions. Thumbs up Rossopomodoro!
Recommendation (4 / 5)
If you’re in the mood for pizza and fancy a quick bite to eat, go to Rossopomodoro. Although I’m not sure how a 6 pizza oven could cope during a busy evening…
