I’d agreed to meet friends at Liverpool Street station as it was a pretty central location for all of us, so I used this opportunity to search for a new pizzeria to try out. I found Rocket pizza (which will soon be on the list) and Pizza Union, to which I was lured into by the surprisingly inexpensive prices. It was pretty easy to find using Google Maps and I was congratulated for my newly found navigational ability.
Pizza Union takes up quite a large shop front, and is in a pretty brilliant location, especially for the busy city lunch-time trade. Inside, it was almost like a warehouse, reminding me a little of ICCOs layout, with a massive, impressively centred wood fired oven, found towards the back of the venue. The atmosphere was very relaxed, with very quiet music and plenty of table and benches to choose from. We chose a seat by the window, and ordered at the bar. Each table is equipped with chilli oil, chilli flakes and salt and pepper, which is an extra touch that I quite liked.
Lucy and I decided to share a Fiorentina and Colin had the meatiest option. We also ordered a birra moretti and some olives while we waited for our buzzer to go off. Five minutes later, our buzzer went and we retrieved our pizzas. The colours were really impressive, with the vibrant green of the spinach, yellow-orange of the egg yolk and creaminess of the parmesan, I couldn’t wait to get stuck in. I do have some niggles though, starting with the toppings – firstly, the egg was slightly over-cooked, not having that runny yolk that oozes over the pizza when broken into. The spinach also hadn’t been cooked which is rare for a fiorintina, and after eating half the pizza, I’m still not sure it worked. Also, the dough, despite being beautifully crisp and thin, didn’t have much taste. A little seasoning may have helped perhaps.
We finished our pizza and were in no way satisfied. True, we only had half a pizza each but usually a half would suit me fine. So, we agreed to go somewhere else for course number two.
Recommendation (3 / 5)
If you were passing by and fancied a ‘superfast’ lunch, I’d absolutely recommend getting a pizza from Pizza Union, however, don’t even think about sharing one as the dough is stretched so thin that it almost makes it a light snack.

NTK: If you’re feeling slightly peckish, half a pizza is unlikely to do the job so I’d order a whole one to be on the safe side!
