I’ve wanted to try Homeslice for a while as it’s listed in quite a few ‘top ten pizza’ guides and quite a few friends have recommended it to me. I also liked its simple concept, serving only 6 – 8 pizzas at £4 a slice or £20 for a 20 inch pizza.
Okay, so let’s talk directions. If you’ve read a couple of these reviews, you may have realised my ridiculously easy ability to get lost. However, this time I was determined to change the record, and even used Google Maps and Cameron’s military navigational ability, and we STILL couldn’t find it. We even tried the fail safe ‘ask people where it is’ approach, but none of the five people we asked had a clue! I was beginning to doubt whether it existed, but after a little searching, we found HomeSlice tucked away, off a side street into a little alcove of shops and eateries. It actually had a pretty nice location, and for such a hidden gem, was heaving! Walking in, we were instantly greeted with a lively buzz of chatter, laughter and activity. There were people queuing for a table, which always stands out as a good sign, but we decided to take ours away so there wasn’t a wait for us.

See the pizzaoili at work!
While we waited for our chosen ‘mushroom, ricotta and pumpkin seed’ slice to be warmed, we had a look around and grew to like the place more and more. There were 3 taps installed into the wall, and on enquiry, we found out these were for water, prosecco and beer – a pretty cool touch we both agreed. We also watched the pizzaioli stretch the dough, and wow was it impressive! I probably could have watched in awe for quite a while, but soon enough our pizza was ready and as everyone knows, my stomach comes first!
On first bite, I think if you looked close enough, you would have seen us visually salivate. The combination of flavours, on top of a beautifully stretched thin base was perfect. The dough did go cold really quickly though, but that was inevitable given it’s thin base and the fact it was a pretty chilly January evening. The intention was to ‘walk and devour’ but it was so good, that neither of us could move and we ended up demolishing it outside HomeSlice. If anyone wants some good marketing, have Cameron and I eat a slice of good pizza outside your restaurant! The crust was lovely as well, charred around the edges and slightly chewy, it almost shared that almost pancakey taste that Ben and I loved so much in Astoria, Soho.
So, the verdict – other than the fact we only actually had one solitary lump of ricotta on our slice, it was pretty darn good! But I do think I need to return and have a dine-in experience when a) I’m completely sober (as we had just knocked back 4 cocktails each at Roadhouse) and b) when I’m not so hungry (everything tastes better when you’re hungry).
Recommendation (4 / 5)
I’d definitely recommend HomeSlice, try and get there a little earlier to guarantee a seat as the atmosphere makes it pretty cool to share a 20 inch pizza in.

NTK: If you’re feeling slightly peckish, one slice is unlikely to do the job so I’d order 2 to be on the safe side!
