I hadn’t seen an old university friend for a while and as we both now live in London, we opted for a Sunday brunch catch up in Kings Cross. Caravan was her suggestion, and what a fantastic one at that. It’s positioned within the Art University grounds, so a pretty brilliant location. It has a similar design to many up and coming restaurants in London, that of an old warehouse, resulting in a wide and airy open plan space.
I got there early so ordered a flat white, made with their own special blend of Colombian beans. At £2.60 it was pretty expensive for a coffee but it was worth it. It had that slightly sour taste of proper independent coffee beans and was topped off with the perfect white leaf. To be honest, I was happy to have a couple of minutes by myself as it’s usually hard enough for me to decide what to eat but Caravan’s brunch menu was just superb. So good that I had to get the waitress to decide for me so she recommended the raclette French toast with watercress and bacon. My friend had Caravan’s Full English with poached eggs. I also ordered a long black with milk on the side to go with it.
The food came within ten minutes and looked delicious. The raclette tasted very similar to those that I’ve had in France but the dish was a little stodgy and samey tasting (every bite just tasted exactly the same). I ended up giving a third away and leaving a bit. But, I did leave satisfied in the end – and that’s the important thing right? I also loved the way my second coffee was presented, the milk came in a tiny milk man’s jug which I thought was pretty cute. It’s always the little extra touches that stand out, to me anyway.
Finally, I really think the toilets need commenting on. Whenever I go out to eat, I always do the ‘toilet check’ and Caravan’s didn’t disappoint. I can’t really describe the appeal so you’ll have to go and check it out for yourself, but the hand cream was a main selling point. I love it when toilets have hand cream, this is definitely something I’ll be offering in my restaurant. Pizza scented maybe?!
Recommendation (4 / 5)
Even if you’re not in the area, I’d recommend a visit. Try the coffee and perhaps go with a couple of people who don’t mind sharing so you can try a mixture of the delicious delights on the menu.
