I’d arranged to meet an old school friend, Rachel for a drink after work and she recommended the Book Club. Only a short walk from Shoreditch High Street Station, I found it tucked away into a side street off the main street (turn down by Pret a Manger) and was instantly impressed by it’s exterior. It looked welcoming, and busy – so busy that once inside, I found it pretty hard to find a seat. At a bar, I find there’s two type of people – those who like to stand, and those who like to sit. I definitely fall into the latter category so I went off to find some nice people who wouldn’t mind sharing their table with us.
The food and drinks menus were pretty good, I really liked the clipboard like design too although there were only three options for wine by the glass so perhaps a little limited. I need to remember that having less choice is good for someone as indecisive as me as 9 times out of ten I end up happy with my selection, with the Book Club being no exception. The house Sicilian white selected turned out to be dangerously easy to drink. Rachel ordered some calamari which she let me dig into too. Calarami is something I’m always wary of ordering as it so oftens disappoints, but the Book Club did well. It wasn’t chewy or dry – it was deliciously moist and with the accompanient of lemon aioli, I could have happily managed a whole portion to myself.
Another glass of wine down, I was beginning to feel a little merry and would have definitely given Rachel a run for her money at the ping pong tables if I hadn’t had to rush off. Next time, game on.
Recommendation (4 / 5)
If you’re in the area, or even if you need to travel slightly to get there, I’d definitely recommend the Book Club as somewhere to eat, drink or play.
