The first in my ‘rest of the world’ quest to find the perfect pizza began at Beau Jo’s, in Colorado. Oddly, I wasn’t even looking for it. My sister Ellie had got a little over excited about going to one of the Man vs Food hot spots in Denver, which I was keen to search this online. At this point I found Beau Jo’s – home to another Man vs. Food challenge – the 14lb pizza. After slightly more browsing, I discovered that they made their dough with honey and were famous for their ‘mountain pies’ coming in sizes starting at 1lb, all the way to 14lb. Sounded ridiculous, but game on!
On first impressions, Beau Jos was nothing worth writing home about. It looked like a typical American diner but for a Thursday night, was pretty busy. But the biggest attraction was the smell! It was just delicious – if you weren’t in the mood for pizza beforehand, with the smell of freshly baked pizza dough, you’d have definitely be tempted by this point. As I didn’t think I could face even the smallest size ‘mountain pie’, the 1 pounder, I shared one with Ellie. After raking through an enormous, delicious sounding menu, we decided on the ‘hamburger’ on half and ‘Italian’ on the other half.
Twenty minutes later and half a tray of bottomless chips down, our pizzas arrived. My parents had chosen one of the ‘altitude pizzas’, which were of the thin crust variety but ours was the true show stopper. It was served with honey and divided into six ginormous slices, with at least one inch high crusts. So huge, that I could only manage one and a half slices. Pathetic I know, how anyone can do 7 pounds of that stuff has a LOT of respect from me but I refuse to believe it until I see it. Back to our mountain pie…. Ellie thought that the dough was undercooked, and on closer inspection it definitely was, but I actually liked that as it gave it a more varied texture and consistency and when dipped into the honey, was almost perfect. I preferred the hamburger topping as I love a lot of meat on my pizza, I just wish I was hungrier to enjoy more.
After a lot of effort, Ellie and I could only get through a third of our pizza so we doggy bagged it and took it back to the hotel with us.
Recommendation – (3.5 / 5)
If you fancy something a little different to your usual pizza, and have a large appetite, I’d definitely give Beau Jo’s a visit.
