Saturday night took me to my first competitor supper club. We chose one which offered a similar deal to An Evening with MYO: in terms of price, food offering and concept so I was pretty excited about the prospect of actually being a guest. We’d started the night at a street food festival in Shoreditch, making me slightly jealous about the lack of Theodore in the burger-centric street market but my envy was slightly diminished upon the discovery of a great new popup bar in Hoxton Square, called Fevertree. Essentially a gin bar in nature, but way cooler in that everything was served in huge fishbowl like glasses with a stick of cinnamon. Despite having to knock it back as we didn’t want to be late for the supper club, I’d definitely recommend it as a place to go for pre-drinks, although you better make it quick because its only around for another three weeks.
We arrived at the venue, which in this case was a café, and were seated with other guests. We were given a bottle of very enjoyable Spanish wine and introduced ourselves to our dinner companion. She turned out to be Italian, which worked well for me as it gave me the chance to try out some of my fledging Italian. We were enjoying ourselves, sipping at our wine and making small talk with our new friend until she was asked to move as some other guests would be arriving late. A little upset that I’d lost my new friend, I started thinking about food, as we’d been sat down for a while with no trace of something to nibble on.

Our Starter
The evening started with chunks of cheese and salami with cold pitta breads and naan, and a bowl of pesto. Despite being a little dry, I was so hungry that I could have eaten anything. Also, the venue only had an electric oven and hob so I think Oli did well with the equipment available. Soon enough, our original Italian friend re-joined us as did another couple. The first course was farinata (a chickpea based pizza) and a margherita pizza. Oli, the host introduced the food well and recommended us to eat the two pizzas on top of each other, like a carb-centric pizza sandwich. Being a table full of girls, this was slightly intimidating but we gave it a go but I preferred them eaten separately.

Farinata and Margherita Pizza
Our next course was another pizza round and wow, was this the highlight. The pizza came with a type of bechemel sauce and onions, reminding me of something similar to what I’d eaten in Bari, Puglia. Annoyingly I’d eaten too much bread by this point so I couldn’t manage much. Before pudding, Oli played us some of his music with his guitar which gave the evening a little something extra.
Pudding was my least favourite because despite loving all things chocolate, I don’t like overly sweet things. The strawberries just had a little too much sugar, but the accompanying dulce de leche was delicious. However, it was around this point in the evening that we realised that we hadn’t received our upgrade that we’d paid extra for. But… I have to give it to Oli, he couldn’t have done more. He gave us an extra bottle of the yummy Spanish wine and gave us an entire 1kg tin of dulce de leche. Both absolutely crazy, so I left feeling very chuffed but a little guilty.
All in all, I really enjoyed the night. I think the food was perhaps a little too carb heavy but I’m just a diet conscious girl saying that, and the experience was great. We were lucky enough to be sat with some lovely people and Oli was a great host. However, I probably wouldn’t go back as I left with an uncomfortably bloated stomach (definitely my fault) and a little too merry (Also my fault!). However, it gave me a lot of inspiration for ‘An Evening with MYO’, in that I’m going to spend longer describing the dishes as I’d previously thought people didn’t like to be interrupted during their dinner, and try harder to source some form of live music.
